Progression from the Foundation Diploma to ACCA

Find out how eligible FIA students can move to the full ACCA Qualification, when automatic transfer applies, and how previous qualifications or CAT experience may support your next step.

Your Route to ACCA

Moving from FIA to the ACCA Qualification

Foundations in Accountancy provides a route towards the ACCA Qualification for students who want to build their knowledge before progressing to higher-level accountancy studies. The transfer process depends on your FIA progress, academic qualifications, and the rules that apply to your circumstances.

Students who complete the current Foundation Diploma route can progress to the ACCA Qualification with exemptions from the Applied Knowledge exams, subject to ACCA's requirements.

CAT Route

How CAT Experience Can Support Your ACCA Progression

The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification includes practical experience as well as exams. If you complete CAT and then progress to ACCA, eligible experience and shared performance objectives may count towards the ACCA practical experience requirements.

Practical Experience May Count Towards ACCA

ACCA allows eligible CAT experience to contribute towards its practical experience requirements. This can help you carry forward relevant experience instead of treating your previous work as unrelated to your next qualification.

Shared Performance Objectives

Some performance objectives completed through the CAT route may also count towards ACCA's requirements, subject to ACCA's current rules and approval.

Confirm What Applies to You

The amount of experience and the performance objectives that can be recognised depend on your circumstances and the requirements in force. Review ACCA's Foundation-level structure and requirements before planning your remaining practical experience.

A Qualification Milestone

The Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business

The Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business is an award within the ACCA Qualification pathway. Under the current requirements, it is linked to completing or receiving exemptions from the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams, alongside the Ethics and Professional Skills module and the required number of Applied Skills exams actually passed.

Knowledge and Skills complete

The award follows completion of — or exemption from — the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams.

Ethics and Professional Skills

You must also complete the Ethics and Professional Skills module to receive certification for this award.

At least two Skills papers sat

You need to have actually taken and passed at least two Applied Skills exams to be eligible — being exempted from all of them doesn't qualify you for this particular award.

Understanding Your Exemptions

How FIA Exemptions Affect Your Next ACCA Exams

The FIA exams you have completed, your existing qualifications, and the transfer route you use determine which ACCA exams you may be exempt from.

Under the current structure, eligible students who complete the Foundation Diploma can progress with exemptions from the Applied Knowledge exams. Other transfer routes may have different requirements, so check your individual eligibility and exemptions with ACCA rather than assuming that every FIA student follows the same route.

For more information about eligibility and exemption rules, read ACCA Foundation Entry Requirements and Exemptions.

Questions

Not necessarily — most students registered from June/December 2017 onward are automatically opted in to transfer once they complete the Diploma in Accounting and Business, with no separate application needed.

Can I stop the automatic transfer if I don't want it?

Yes — you can opt out at any time through myACCA, and opt back in later if you change your mind.

Does my CAT experience count toward ACCA membership?

They may affect how your completed studies map to the redesigned qualification. Check ACCA's transition guidance for your individual circumstances before choosing your next exams.
