CGMA Professional Qualification

CIMA Qualification and Syllabus

The CIMA qualification develops knowledge of management accounting, business performance and financial strategy. Explore the Certificate in Business Accounting and the Operational, Management and Strategic levels to understand the subjects you may need to study.

AICPA & CIMA

How the CIMA Qualification Is Structured

CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) operates jointly with the AICPA as AICPA & CIMA, awarding the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation on full membership.

16 exams across four levels

An entry Certificate, then three professional levels — Operational, Management, and Strategic.

Three subject pillars

Enterprise (E) — strategy and organisation; Performance (P) — management accounting; Financial (F) — financial reporting and strategy. They run through every professional level.

Objective Tests plus a Case Study

At each professional level you sit three Objective Tests (one per pillar) plus one integrated Case Study — 9 Objective Tests and 3 Case Studies in total, on top of the 4-paper Certificate.

CGMA on membership

Completing Strategic level plus the Practical Experience Requirement leads to full CIMA membership (ACMA or FCMA) and the CGMA designation.

Four levels, 16 exams

How the exams work

Exam format

Objective Tests

90-minute computer-based exams, available on demand year-round at Pearson VUE test centres (or via remote proctoring). Scored on a scaled system out of 150; you need 100 to pass.

Case Study exams

3 hours (plus a 15-minute tutorial), based on a pre-seen business scenario released several weeks in advance, then tested against new information on the day. Run four times a year — February, May, August and November — and marked by trained human assessors against a competency-based grid. You must pass all three Objective Tests at a level before you can sit that level's Case Study.

Alternative routes

Candidates with a relevant Master's degree or MBA may be eligible for the CIMA Masters Gateway, which skips the Operational and Management levels entirely and moves straight to Strategic level. Many employers also support study through the CGMA Finance Leadership Program (FLP), an alternative learning and assessment pathway integrated with workplace experience. See [CIMA entry requirements & exemptions](/about-cima/entry-requirements-and-exemptions).
