ACCA MA2: Managing Costs and Finance

A business can look healthy on paper and still stumble if it loses grip on its costs or runs short of cash. MA2, Managing Costs and Finance, is the paper that teaches you to keep both firmly in hand: recording costs properly, applying the right costing techniques, weighing up decisions, and making sure the money keeps flowing. It builds directly on MA1 and turns you from someone who records cost information into someone who can use it.

What is ACCA MA2?

MA2, Managing Costs and Finance, sits at the next rung of Foundations in Accountancy (FIA), stepping up from the basics into genuine costing and finance skills. Its purpose is to develop your ability to prepare, process, and present cost information that supports management in planning and decision-making across a range of business situations. You move beyond simply recording costs into choosing techniques, appraising decisions, and managing cash — the practical toolkit of a working management accountant.

Sat alongside FA2, MA2 contributes to the ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting at RQF Level 3, and it leads straight into MA (Management Accounting) at Applied Knowledge, where much of what you learn here becomes assumed knowledge. The pass mark is fixed at 50%. Pass rates have climbed steadily, from 67% in June 2025 to 69% in December 2025 and 72% in June 2026 — a clear upward trend and among the healthier figures in the qualification. As an on-demand exam, you can book it when your preparation is ready rather than waiting for a fixed sitting. Those who succeed are the students who practise the techniques and understand the reasoning rather than leaning on memory.

In one line: MA2 teaches you to record costs, apply costing techniques, support decisions, and keep cash under control — so cost figures become something you can act on.

Who MA2 is for

MA2 is far more than a stepping stone. It equips you with skills businesses lean on every single day, and it suits anyone who has MA1 behind them — or equivalent foundations — and is ready to use cost information rather than only record it.

  • You will record costs for materials, labour, and overheads with real accuracy.
  • You will apply costing techniques, from absorption and marginal costing to job, batch, and process costing.
  • You will support decisions using break-even analysis and investment appraisal, and understand how to keep cash under control.

In short, MA2 turns you into someone who can not only measure costs but use them to guide sensible decisions — a skill that sits at the heart of finance. It is normally taken alongside FA2.

Syllabus & topics covered

The syllabus is logically built, carrying you from how cost information is gathered through to how cash is managed. You begin by distinguishing management information from financial accounting and setting up cost systems, then learn to record costs by classification. From there you apply a range of costing techniques, use those numbers to support short-term and investment decisions, and finish with cash management — the element that keeps any plan grounded in reality.

A

Management information

How management information differs from financial accounting, and how cost systems are set up to support planning and decision-making.

B

Cost recording

Recording costs by classification, including valuing material issues with FIFO, LIFO, and weighted average, and accounting for labour and overheads.

C

Costing techniques

Absorption and marginal costing, plus job, batch, process, and service costing — the methods that turn recorded costs into useful product and service figures.

D

Decision making

Cost-volume-profit analysis, short-term decisions built on relevant costs, and investment appraisal through payback, net present value, and internal rate of return.

E

Cash management

Cash flow patterns, managing balances, and preparing cash budgets — a full syllabus area whose marks are easily won with focused practice.

Everything on the syllabus is examinable, but give costing techniques and decision making the greatest share of your time, and the rest of the syllabus will feel far more manageable. Also keep cost recording, investment appraisal, and cash management in regular rotation. ACCA reviews its study guides each year, so always work from the version aligned to your chosen exam date.

MA2 exam format

MA2 is delivered as a two-hour computer-based exam worth 100 marks, all compulsory, with no optional questions to pick between. Unlike the Applied Skills papers, there is no split into written sections.

Because the marks are spread evenly over many short questions, there is no single high-stakes question to fear and nowhere for gaps to hide. Consistent accuracy across every topic is what secures the pass. Questions are drawn from across the whole syllabus, so broad coverage matters more than narrow specialism.

MA2 is the paper where cost figures stop being something you simply record and start becoming something you can act on. The confidence you build here carries you smoothly into MA and the sittings that follow.

How to prepare for MA2

MA2 rewards steady, hands-on practice far more than passive reading. Put in consistent practice, get comfortable with the techniques rather than fearing them, and the pass tends to look after itself.

  • Practise the question style, not just the theory. Work through banks of 2-mark objective questions until the format feels routine.
  • Understand the techniques rather than memorising them. Knowing why a method works lets you apply it to any scenario the exam presents.
  • Drill the core calculations. Costing, break-even, and discounted cash flow reward the accuracy that only repetition builds.
  • Keep your MA1 foundations sharp. Cost classification and materials pricing are treated as assumed knowledge here.
  • Sit the ACCA specimen exam. It shows you the exact style, timing, and on-screen tools you will meet on the day.
  • Pace yourself evenly. With fifty short questions, a calm and steady rhythm beats dwelling on any single one. Getting stuck on the trickier questions can leave easier marks unclaimed at the end.

MA2 frequently asked questions

Is ACCA MA2 hard?
MA2 is very much passable. The pass mark is 50%. Pass rates have climbed from 67% in June 2025 to 69% in December 2025 and 72% in June 2026. Those who succeed are the students who practise the techniques and understand the reasoning rather than leaning on memory. Calculating without understanding is a common slip — if you cannot see why a figure matters, an unfamiliar wording will catch you out.
How is the MA2 exam structured?
MA2 is a two-hour computer-based exam of 100 marks, all compulsory, with no written sections. You sit 50 objective-test questions worth 2 marks each, drawn from across the whole syllabus, mixing computational and non-computational questions. It is on-demand, so you can book it when your preparation is ready.
Which MA2 topics come up most often?
Everything is examinable, but costing techniques (absorption and marginal costing; job, batch, process, and service costing) and decision making (CVP analysis and relevant-cost decisions) deserve the greatest share of your time. Also revise cost recording (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average), investment appraisal (payback, NPV, IRR), and cash management. Do not confuse absorption and marginal costing — they produce different profits, and mixing them up is a common slip. Cash management is a full syllabus area whose marks are easily won with a little focused practice.
What should I already know before MA2?
MA2 builds directly on MA1. Cost classification and materials pricing are treated as assumed knowledge, so keep those foundations sharp before you start the new techniques.
What comes after MA2?
Sat alongside FA2, MA2 contributes to the ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting at RQF Level 3. It leads straight into MA (Management Accounting) at Applied Knowledge, where much of what you learn here becomes assumed knowledge.
