ACCA SBR: Strategic Business Reporting
Every ACCA student sits SBR, and that's actually good news. As one of the two compulsory Essentials papers, it is a shared milestone on the way to qualifying — with a whole world of support built around it. With steady, thoughtful preparation, it is very much within your reach.
What is ACCA SBR?
SBR, Strategic Business Reporting (once known as P2), is the advanced financial reporting paper of the ACCA qualification. It grows directly out of Financial Reporting (FR), and asks you to move beyond preparing the numbers to interpreting them, judging the accounting choices management makes, and explaining what they mean for the people who rely on the accounts.
It sits at Strategic Professional as one of two compulsory Essentials, alongside Strategic Business Leader (SBL). There is no opt-out, but it is a paper thousands of students clear every sitting. Because the accounting knowledge overlaps so closely, ACCA recommends passing SBR before you take on AAA. Every ACCA exam is passed at 50%. SBR was passed at 48% in December 2025, with recent sittings around 47% to 50% — one of the more achievable Strategic Professional papers. The students who succeed are not necessarily the most gifted; they are the ones who practise applying the standards to real scenarios rather than simply memorising them.
In one line: SBR teaches you to apply and evaluate IFRS with professional judgement — interpreting the numbers, challenging accounting choices, and explaining what they mean for stakeholders.
Who SBR is for
Because SBR is compulsory, every ACCA student takes it. It is there because the skills it develops sit at the heart of what a qualified accountant does every day. It is not a hurdle to clear and forget — it is a toolkit you will draw on for the rest of your career.
- You will understand IFRS Accounting Standards at a genuinely professional depth.
- You will learn to read accounts through the eyes of investors and other stakeholders.
- You will sharpen the ethical judgement that employers value most.
SBR suits anyone who has completed Financial Reporting and is ready for Strategic Professional. If AAA is on your horizon, pass SBR first — ACCA recommends that order because the accounting knowledge overlaps so closely.
Syllabus & topics covered
The syllabus is built around applying and evaluating IFRS Accounting Standards with real professional judgement. In everyday language, you will get to grips with the Conceptual Framework, the major IFRS standards covering things like revenue, leases, and financial instruments, how to consolidate group accounts, and how to interpret and explain results to different audiences — all underpinned by strong ethics. The main areas are:
Fundamental ethical and professional principles
Ethics is woven right through the paper and central to Section A. Treat it as core, not an afterthought.
The financial reporting framework
The Conceptual Framework — the 'why' behind the standards, so you can apply them to unfamiliar situations.
Reporting the financial performance of entities
Major IFRS standards: revenue (IFRS 15), leases (IFRS 16), financial instruments (IFRS 9), impairment and deferred tax.
Financial statements of groups of entities
Group accounting and consolidations — the cornerstone of Section A. Make these second nature.
Interpreting information for different stakeholders
Financial and non-financial information, read and explained through the eyes of investors and other users.
Changes in accounting regulation
The impact of changes and potential changes. From September 2025, IFRS 18 replaces IAS 1, and sustainability reporting is firmly on the agenda.
Employability and technology skills
The CBE skills you need on the day — word processing, the spreadsheet for the group question, and the exam tools.
Any standard can appear, but examiner feedback points to a familiar set of favourites: group accounting, IFRS 15, IFRS 16, IFRS 9, impairment and deferred tax, and ethics. Get comfortable with this core and you will be ready for the large majority of what any sitting asks. SBR is refreshed regularly, so always study the syllabus version that matches your exam date.
SBR exam format
SBR is a computer-based exam lasting 3 hours and 15 minutes, worth 100 marks, with every question compulsory. You will both write and calculate, and you will use a spreadsheet for the group question. It comes in two sections.
Question 1 asks you to discuss the issues and adjust a consolidated financial statement. Section B always brings in a stakeholder perspective and may include some calculation. As a rough timing guide, around 1.8 minutes per mark keeps you comfortably on track across both sections.
Where SBR fits in the ACCA pathway
SBR sits at Strategic Professional as one of two compulsory Essentials, alongside SBL. It grows directly out of Financial Reporting at Applied Skills, and ACCA recommends passing it before AAA.
SBR may be compulsory, but it is far from a chore. It is the paper that turns you into a confident, credible reporter of financial information — a skill that stays with you long after you qualify.
How to prepare for SBR
SBR rewards understanding far more than memory. You are asked to apply standards to unfamiliar situations, so rote learning only carries you so far. Approach it steadily, practise often, and you may be pleasantly surprised by how achievable it really is.
- Learn the 'why', not just the rule. Understand the principle behind each standard and you can apply it anywhere. Memorising without understanding is the classic slip.
- Practise with real scenarios. Work through past questions and write out your reasoning, not just the answer. The written marks are every bit as real as the calculations.
- Keep your FR knowledge warm. SBR assumes the fundamentals, so refresh them early and often.
- Embrace the discussion marks, and give ethics the attention it deserves — it runs throughout the paper.
- Learn from the examiner's reports. They flag the same slips each sitting, and they are a genuine goldmine.
- Get familiar with the CBE Practice Platform, and do not rush the group question. Section A carries serious marks, so give it the time it needs.
